Ryker

I woke up with Serenity wrapped in my arms. Her breathing was still slow and deep. I lifted my head, trying to see her face without waking her. I had sent Asher a text last night so he wouldn’t be worried that Serenity was missing when he woke up this morning.

He was expecting us around lunchtime, which meant I could make her breakfast in bed. I almost laughed at myself. Really? Never in my life had I actually made a woman breakfast in bed. Not once. In reality, it hadn’t ever crossed my mind until just now. What was it about Serenity that turned me into this sappy guy I didn’t recognize?

Hell if I knew.

It was all about making her smile.

Last night, when she’d called herself a monster, that vicious animalistic rage had my wolf clawing his way forward in my consciousness, demanding vengeance for the pain Deidra Harlow had caused our mate. When I’d turned around and had seen her nose bleeding, I’d been worried I was losing her. A few months ago, Vance had hacked into Evolution Defense’s server and we discovered many of the members of the Timberwolves squad that Harlow had shot up with her super soldier serum had died of brain bleeds.

That fact had echoed through my head the second I had seen the blood dripping down her face.

I hated that my reaction made her think I was afraid of her. After her show last night, I did have a healthy respect of her power, yes, but I didn’t worry that she’d ever turn it against me. She’d had these gifts her entire life. She could’ve used her powers to take over the world or make herself rich by astral-projecting and spying on companies, then using that knowledge to make targeted inside trades on the stock market, and that was probably just the tip of the iceberg.

She could’ve killed her mother, but she hadn’t.

What would she do if she couldn’t stop her mother’s plan to expose shifters? How far would Serenity go?

I stared at the ceiling, begging the memories of that day to vanish. Why couldn’t I just forget? Build a mental trunk, stuff that day inside, lock it, and throw away the key.

Serenity lifted her head. “What’s wrong? Your heart is racing.”

I blinked, wiping sweat from my forehead. Shit. I blew out a breath and shook my head. “Nothing. The past was trying to bite me in the ass.” I mentally grasped for anything to change the subject. “Want some breakfast?”

She arched a brow. “Do you really think you can distract me with food?” Her expression softened as she slid her hand up my chest. “I’ve confided in you, but other than your Harley, the Wolf Pack Bar, and this apartment, I hardly know you.”

“We’re naked in bed together so I think we know each other a little better than that.” I chuckled. “Sorry. I’m so used to pretending the past doesn’t exist, it’s a knee-jerk reaction.”

I ran my fingertips up her back,
